Secret of Shibuya’s Origin

Shibuya is a cutting-edge city visited by 2.9 million people every day. However, a slight shift in perspective reveals a completely different scenery. This 1-hour time-travel tour unravels the “roots of Shibuya” hidden behind its glamorous image.
Hachiko Statue
Japan’s Most Famous Meeting Spot The tour begins at the symbol of Shibuya. The story of the loyal dog who waited for his master is world-famous, but there are surprising historical facts hidden here, such as the statue being reconstructed after being melted down for metal during the war.

Shibuya Stream
The “Shibuya River” Revived from Beneath the Concrete Once the model for the nursery rhyme “Spring Brook” (Haru no Ogawa), the Shibuya River was hidden underground for many years. Thanks to redevelopment, it has been reborn as a waterfront space. Walking here reveals the secret of the terrain and why this area is called “Shibuya” (meaning “Bitter Valley”).

Toyosaka Inari Shrine
Vermilion Torii Gates Lined Up in a Canyon of Buildings Just a stone’s throw from Shibuya Stream, a quiet space appears that makes you forget the hustle and bustle of the city. This Inari shrine, with its impressive rows of vermilion torii gates, has watched over the prosperity of businesses in this area since ancient times. It is a hidden “power spot” that is also very photogenic.

Konno Hachimangu Shrine
The Birthplace of Shibuya and the Heian Fortress “Shibuya Castle” This is the core of the tour—the roots of Shibuya itself. The shrine sits on the site of “Shibuya Castle,” the residence of the Shibuya clan in the late Heian period. It is full of highlights that history buffs will love, such as the divine gate donated by Kasuga no Tsubone (wet nurse to the third Shogun, Iemitsu) and the legendary “Konno Zakura” cherry tree.

Shibuya Hikarie
An Observation Deck Overlooking the Valley Floor and the Future After exploring the history, we head to a modern landmark. Looking down on the city from the high floors, you can clearly see that the “river” and “shrine” you just walked through lie at the bottom of a massive valley. Experience the dynamism of Shibuya, where the past and future coexist, before the tour concludes.
